For starting out we recommend a seat harness: the leg loops stop it riding up, which is the most common problem while learning. Once you start jumping and want more freedom, a waist harness is the logical next step.
Seat or waist harness
How to pick a harness that neither rides up nor digs in
A harness is the one piece of gear you wear the whole session, and the one that can ruin it on its own. Decide the cut first, then the size, and only then the material.
Seat harness
Leg loops mean it cannot ride up. That is why we recommend it for beginners: while the kite still pulls forward more than up, a seat harness stays where it belongs. It is also kind on long sessions. Examples: AK Fuse, RRD Discover Plus.
Waist harness
More freedom of movement and better force transfer when jumping — which is why most riders switch once they start boosting. The downside: it can ride up if it is too small, too loose, or if the kite pulls too high.
Hard shell
A rigid back (for example the AK Method RS Carbon or RRD Shield) spreads the load over a larger area, so it does not twist and rides up less. A softer harness moulds to your body and feels more flexible.
Size
A harness should sit snugly on the lower ribs with no air pockets. If it rides up while you ride, it is almost always too big or too loose — not too small.

Usually because it is too big or not tightened enough — not because it is too small. Check your stance too: riding upright with the kite high pulls you upward. Hard-shell models ride up less because they do not twist.
The spreader bar is the metal part with the hook that spreads the load across the front of the harness. On some models it can be swapped (for example for the AK Aerobar system) — it changes the hook-in feel more than you would expect.
