The northern Adriatic — what to expect and what to pack
The Slovenian coast is short, so most riders here sooner or later ride in Croatia too. Below is a short overview of what to expect at each spot and which gear works there — not a replacement for local information, but help with packing.
The coastline is short and busy; options are limited and depend on the season and local rules. Two winds dominate: the bora, gusty and offshore, and the maestral, a summer thermal wind that usually builds in the afternoon. The bora is not a wind to learn in.
A shallow lagoon with flat water, known as one of the friendliest places to learn on this part of the Adriatic. Flat water and waist-deep shallows forgive mistakes that would cost you dearly in waves.
The bays on Pag are popular with riders looking for wind and fewer crowds. The island is known for the bora — which means excellent days for the experienced and demanding conditions for beginners.
Viganj on the Pelješac peninsula is among the best-known sailing and kiting places on the Adriatic precisely because of its reliable afternoon maestral. The water is deeper, and the spot suits riders who are already independent.
For the summer Adriatic the starting point is a bigger kite than you ride at home — the maestral is often moderate. Two sizes (say 9 and 12 m²) cover almost everything; how to choose is in the kite size guide. For wetsuits, lycra or 2 mm does the job in summer, and 3/2 mm in May and September.

For experienced riders the bora can be excellent; for beginners it is not. It blows offshore and is gusty, so the pull changes from second to second, and offshore wind carries you away from the beach. If you are not fully independent yet, wait for the maestral.
The summer maestral is often moderate, so most people bring a bigger kite than they use at home — two sizes around 9 and 12 m² cover nearly every day. A wetsuit is usually unnecessary in summer; lycra or 2 mm is enough. Do not forget a helmet and sunglasses.
