Start from your weight and your usual wind: lighter rider and stronger wind → smaller board; heavier rider and lighter wind → bigger. If this is your first board, go bigger — it planes earlier and forgives more mistakes.
Which kiteboard to choose
Size, shape and stiffness — and which of them actually changes the ride
A board matters less to how you ride than the kite does, but more to how you feel on the water. Three numbers tell you nearly everything: size, shape (rocker) and stiffness.
Size
A bigger board planes earlier, goes upwind more easily and forgives mistakes — better for starting out and for light wind. A smaller board is faster, more controlled in strong wind and more playful. On the northern Adriatic, where the wind is often moderate, a bigger board pays off more often than people expect.
Rocker and shape
More rocker lands softer and handles chop better, but needs more power to get going. A flatter board is faster and planes sooner. Big-air boards usually sit in between — the Harlem Ascent, for instance.
Stiffness
A softer board damps chop and is kinder to your knees; a stiffer one gives more feedback and holds better at speed. Carbon boards such as the Lieuwe Falcon are lighter and more responsive.
When the board is not the problem
If your board only started feeling wrong in the last year, the pads are often to blame rather than the board. The foam packs down and your foot starts to move; a new set (Lieuwe Pro Pads, RRD Rad Pad) costs far less than a new board.

Lighter and more responsive, yes — but also stiffer. If you jump a lot and chase feedback, carbon is an advantage. If you ride chop or value comfort, a softer board is often nicer. Price reflects purpose, not ride quality.
When the foam loses its bounce and your foot starts moving while riding — with regular use that is usually after a few seasons. Replacement is cheap and often makes a board feel new again.
