What actually determines size — and why one kite rarely covers every day
The question "what kite size do I need" has one honest answer: it depends. Not as a dodge, but because four things decide it at once — your weight, the wind at your spot, your board and your skill.
A heavier rider needs a bigger kite in the same wind; stronger wind calls for a smaller one. The table below is orientation for twintip freeride riding, not a rule — differences between models are large, so treat it as a starting point for a conversation.

One kite covers roughly half the days in a season. Two sizes about 3 m² apart (say 9 and 12) cover the large majority — which is why a second kite almost always beats a second board as the next purchase.
A bigger board planes earlier, so it lets you ride a smaller kite than you otherwise would. Beginners should not buy a kite that is oversized "just in case": in stronger wind an oversized kite is not useful, it is dangerous.
The same square metres pull differently across models. Light-wind kites (Zephyr, Thrive LiteX) get going in less wind than big-air models of the same size. Choose size and model together, not separately.

If this is your first kite, buy one — the size that covers the most common wind at your spot. A second kite (about 3 m² apart) is the next purchase that adds the most: together they cover most of the season. A second board is almost always less useful than a second kite.
No. In stronger wind an oversized kite pulls harder than you can depower, and that is the most common source of bad experiences. Pick the size for the actual conditions and wait for the right day.
